How to Choose the Right Size Rug

One of the most common mistakes I see when a client has chosen a rug on their own or is not sure what size rug to purchase for their space is choosing a rug that is too small. Most commonly the reason is the price. Why would you spend more on a larger rug if you don’t need it. Well, I’m here to tell you, you do need a large rug. Having a rug that is too small is one of the most noticeable mistakes when visitors enter your home. Very rarely does one choose a rug that is too large. There are two things to take into account when choosing the size of rug that is right for your space…

  1. The size of your room. Generally you want to get the largest rug your space will allow.

  2. Placement and size of your furniture. The correct size will vary here based on the type of room and what furniture will be placed in it.

If you are choosing your rug as a starting point in your space, get the largest rug space allows for and then you know it cannot be a mistake. Most ready made rugs come in 2’x3’, 3’x5’, 5’x7’, 6’x9’, 8’x10’, 9’x12’ and sometimes 10’x13’. Although if a larger rug is necessary, there are endless custom made choices.

Living Room

The general rule for the living room is that all seating should have at least front legs on the rug.

Dining Room

In the dining room, it’s important that the rug is large enough so that when chairs are pulled out they don’t catch on the edge of the rug. This is annoying and uncomfortable in the space. You want at least 24” on each side of table.

Bedroom

I’ve seen people put two smaller rugs on either side of bed as well, but I don’t recommend this look. Looks cleaner with one large rug.

Foyer/Entry

Many options here. Each will depend on the shape, size and orientation of your entry. Runners are a great way to separate spaces.
